What will happen up there

On August 12 the Moon will pass exactly in front of the Sun. Along a narrow band crossing Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, day will briefly turn to twilight — in Spain it happens near sunset, which will make it one of the most photographed eclipses in years. Across most of Europe and parts of North America, the Sun will look partially bitten instead.

Honesty first: from Latin America this eclipse will not be visible in the sky — it happens while the Sun is on the other side of the horizon. If you work with astrology, though, what matters is not whether you can watch it, but where it lands in your chart. More on that below.

What time is the eclipse where you are

The exact instant of the new moon — Sun and Moon meeting at 20° Leo — is the same for everyone on Earth. What changes is the clock you read it on.

Iceland and northern Spain are where totality actually lands. In Spain the Sun is low, close to sunset — the eclipse happens almost on the horizon.

What a solar eclipse is (and what it is not)

A solar eclipse is simply a new moon with better aim than usual: Sun and Moon meet, as they do every month, but this time aligned closely enough with the Moon's orbital crossing points for the Moon to cover the Sun. Astronomers can compute them centuries ahead — this one was predictable before your great-grandparents were born.

So no: it is not a punishment, an omen, or a cosmic ambush. In astrology an eclipse is read as an intensified new moon — an activator. It lights up, and exposes, what was already ready to change.

What it means: Leo leaves something in plain sight

This eclipse happens at 20° of Leo. Leo speaks of identity, creative work, visibility, and what makes you feel proudly yourself. With eclipse intensity, something around these themes gets exposed: a desire to take up more space, work that no longer wants to stay private, a role you have outgrown.

And there is a timing detail almost nobody mentions: the axis of the Moon's nodes — the path along which eclipses happen — has not yet reached this degree; it will cross it around March 2027. So read this eclipse as an exposure: what it shows now gets truly worked through in the months that follow. It is not a door that opens and closes within a week.

None of this happens to you automatically. An eclipse doesn't push anyone off a cliff; it activates what was already in motion. If nothing in your life touches these themes right now, this can simply be a bright, interesting new moon.

Does it touch you directly?

The eclipse lands harder for people who have important points of their chart near 20° of Leo or of Aquarius — roughly between 17° and 23° — such as the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant or a personal planet. It also speaks, more softly, to the middle degrees of Taurus and Scorpio. If your chart has nothing there, you'll likely feel this season as background music, not as your song — and that is also a perfectly good answer.

And if the eclipse does touch a planet of your chart, read it as an activator, not a threat: a conjunction or opposition to Venus announces a new Venusian stage (bonds, tastes, what you value); a trine to Jupiter, a change that opens opportunities; a square, a change with friction that asks for adjustment. The concrete area of life comes from the house that planet lives in and the houses it rules — which is exactly what the personal reading looks at.

How to make the most of it

• Don't demand results that week. What this eclipse exposes unfolds over months; take note of it, don't force it.
• Choose one honest beginning connected to being seen: publish, apply, audition, ask.
• Don't force drama. If the week feels ordinary, that's information too. Eclipses mark chapters for some charts and quiet pages for others.
• If you get to watch it, protect your eyes. Never look at a partial eclipse without certified eclipse glasses.

How long does the effect last?

The season — this eclipse and the lunar one of August 28 — opens and closes within two weeks, but that is the season, not your processes: the themes an eclipse touches don't expire on its dates. They remain in force until the next eclipse season, in February 2027 — and the solar eclipse of February 6, 2027 will fall almost on this same axis, in Aquarius, continuing the thread this one leaves in view.
