A birth chart without a birth time: what works and what doesn't

This is the question I get most, and it almost always arrives with an apology, as if a missing record were the fault of the person asking. It is not: in many countries the time was never written down, or it was and the paper is gone.

The short answer is that you lose considerably less than people fear — but what you lose matters. It is worth knowing exactly what sits on each side of the line.

What does not change without the time

Most of your chart is independent of the hour. Planets move slowly: across the 24 hours of your birth day, almost none of them manages to change sign.

Your Sun sign holds, and so does where Mercury, Venus and Mars stood. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto hold easily — in a day they barely move. And nearly every aspect between them holds too, which is a large part of what a chart reading actually is.

Put differently: the what survives. Whatever describes how you think, how you love, how you push, and the underlying tensions between those, is all still there.

What you do lose

Two things, and both carry weight.

The first is the Ascendant, which advances one degree every four minutes and circles the entire zodiac in a day. Without a time there is no honest way to know it: any of the twelve signs is possible.

The second is the houses — the division of the chart into areas of life. Without a time there is no telling whether your Mars falls in the house of work or the house of partnership, and that changes the reading considerably. The detail is in the 12 houses explained simply.

The Moon is the borderline case

The Moon deserves its own paragraph because it is the only genuinely fast body: it covers between 13 and 14 degrees in 24 hours, nearly half a sign.

Usually that does no harm: if at noon it sat in the middle of a sign, it was in that sign all day. The problem appears when the Moon changed sign on your birth day. Then half the day gives one answer and half gives another, and there is no deciding without the time.

It takes a minute to check: you look at whether a sign change happened that day. If it did not, your Moon is certain even with no time at all.

Where to find the time

Before giving it up for lost, it is worth trying in this order:

• The full birth certificate. Not the ID card or the short extract: the long copy issued by the civil registry. In much of Latin America and Europe it includes the hour even when the short document does not show it.
• The civil registry, asking for the literal or full copy. That is the name of the request in most countries, and it can usually be done online.
• The hospital record. When the registry does not have it, the place where you were born sometimes does.
• The baby book, the album, an old telegram. More often than you would expect, the time is handwritten on some family paper.
• Whoever was there. A memory like "it was before dawn" or "we still made it to lunch" will not give you the minute, but it rules out half the chart.

And if it never turns up

Then the work is done without it, and the limit is stated. I set the chart for noon — the usual convention, because it spreads the error and never leaves it larger than twelve hours — and write the reading with no Ascendant and no houses, naming what cannot be claimed.

What I do not do is fill the gap. A reading that hands you an Ascendant without having your time is guessing between twelve options, and that is not a reading: it is a coin toss with technical vocabulary.

Some astrologers offer to "rectify" the time by deducing it from events in your life. It is an old and respectable technique, but it is slow, expensive and gives no certainty. I do not offer it.

The essentials

• Without the time, most of the chart survives: Sun, planets and their aspects.
• The Ascendant and the houses are lost. They cannot be guessed.
• The Moon survives unless it changed sign that day.
• The time is usually on the long copy of the birth certificate.
• With no time, the chart is set for noon and the limits are stated.
